Jenin-جنين

Jenin was known in ancient times as the village of “Ayn-Jenin” or “Tel Jenin”. The word “‘ayn” means “water spring” in Arabic and Hebrew, and the word “Jenin” refers to garden in heaven (janna). There is an association of Jenin with the biblical city of Ein-Ganim.

 Jenin has a heavy history of resistance and of civil unrest, but I’ll try to be as brief as possible 😭 in 1936 Jenin was somewhat a base for the Arab revolt where many Palestinian militias were fighting British colonizers (and zionists).  We must never forget the battle of Jenin and the massacre committed by Zionism in 2002. Zionists enforced a tight seige under operation defensive shield, the refugee camp was in total lock down. In a matter of 11 days, 52 people (that we know of) were murdered. * Fourteen-year-old Muhammad Hawashin was shot twice in the face and killed on 3 April as he walked with a group of women and children towards the local hospital.

* Wheelchair-bound Kamal Zghair, 57-years-old, was shot and run over by IDF tanks on 10 April as he wheeled himself down the road to his home, carrying a white flag.

   I have been dying to visit Jenin, mostly to see “The freedom theatre”. The theatre holds the silenced and untold stories of the people in Jenin, powerful stories in the form of art ❤️ I can’t imagine a more resilient and healing space.
