Tatreez is a unique and traditional form of embroidery that is said to have originated in Palestine thousands of years ago.
Throughout time, tatreez has become a powerful and resilient form of art as well as a strong symbol of Palestinian Nationalism. Many Palestinian women have used tatreez to resist the occupation and preserve our history.
In this project, I used tatreez to express solidarity with my Black comrades. . Creating them into masks meant to symbolize community care and the need to abolish white supremacist institutions. The call to abolish prisons and police, is a call to embrace justice structures that are rooted in restoration rather than punishment.
As the zionist entity continues to illegally annex our land and forcibly displace my people, I decided to name each mask after different Palestinian village in hope to preserve our history and stories. I found that naming each mask really brought them to life as they each carry different memories of Palestine.
This project would not have been possible without Palestine Remembered
They have done such an incredible job with interviewing a number of Nakba Survivors. If you are able, I urge that you donate to this wonderful organizations through their site!
