Kowkab al Howa-كوكب الهوا

Tatreez mask

This mask is named after a pre 1948 village called kowkab al howa, which can be translated to Planet of Air.

Tatreez Mask

Kawkab was a very small village, had a population of 300 ppl. Kowkab was well known for it’s wheat. Nejmeh Al Jaber described how all the villagers would sing together (at times in sync) while they harvested wheat. She also described how the British used to break into people’s homes and steal their wheat and belongings. 1948,

The day the Iraqi army entered the borders of Palestine, zionist occupation forces surrounded kowkab. Nejmeh remembers bombing and panic through the village, and seeked refuge to a nearby village. Kowkab is now a depopulated “tourist” location used by illegitimate Israeli occupiers.
